LUIS UNAS

Professional experience

Luís Unas has 28 years of experience in sustainable forest management, agroforestry asset valuation, risk assessment and mitigation in natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, voluntary carbon markets, and forestry investment fund management.

He is Senior Consultant of Nature & Consulting, a company specialized in providing high-quality nature asset valuations and intelligence on natural assets.

He was the Founding Partner and CEO of Hakuturi, S.A. (since 2021), a forestry asset management company overseeing a 10,000-hectare portfolio of agroforestry assets. Hakuturi achieved Portugal’s first VCS carbon certification and the first issuance of VCS-certified carbon credits.

Previously, Luís served as CEO of Floresta Atlântica – SGOIC, the first Timber Investment Management Organization (TIMO) in the Iberian Peninsula, where he launched and managed three agroforestry investment funds covering over 8,000 hectares in Portugal and Spain (2007–2021).

He has also acted as consultant for several agroforestry investment companies and successfully developed the Rewilding Mountain Forest Ecosystems Project, the first project supported by the European Investment Bank’s Natural Capital Finance Facility (NCFF).

Earlier in his career, Luís worked for Portugal’s largest Forest Owners Association (representing more than 200,000 hectares), where he held various positions up to Executive Director over a 10-year period.

He was also a founding member and Scientific Council member of the Arrábida Energy and Environment Agency (since 2007), and served as an invited expert on the Portuguese Commission on Climate Change and as a Board Member of the Portuguese Forest Council.

Luís participated in the development, launch, and management of Carbono Zero®, Portugal’s leading voluntary carbon market brand. He also worked as a research fellow at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA).

In 2019, he was elected Board Member of the Faculty of Forest Engineering of the Portuguese Order of Engineers, contributing to the promotion and representation of the forestry engineering profession in Portugal.
